Very informative. Everywhere situation is same as some Govts promoting in legal way as here in Canada, some of with illegal nexus as in India. Even more worse where Govts generate taxes out of this, and also youth will not question about employment to the Govt too.

Here in Canada high school Kids getting trained in schools with safe drug kits, every drug is legal here. Almost every plaza has cannabis store. Govt generating huge taxes out of these drugs.

You are right there is no safe haven when it comes to drugs.

This very informative write up contains causes, effects, faults and remedial measurements.

In my view public participation is a must to curb this menace. More Special courts for trails of NDPS cases need to be designated. Monitoring of investigation and role intelligence agencies need to be strengthened.. Special measurements need to be taken for rehabilitation of drugs edicts.. Will of the state is most important issue.🙏🙏

Very insightful comments. Thanks.

However, not many people are aware of this new provision in the NDPS Act.

Section 64A in The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985

1[64A. Immunity from prosecution to addicts volunteering for treatment.—Any addict, who is charged with an offence punishable under section 27 or with offences involving small quantity of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances, who voluntarily seeks to undergo medical treatment for de-addiction from a hospital or an institution maintained or recognised by the Government or a local authority and undergoes such treatment shall not be liable to prosecution under section 27 or under any other section for offences involving small quantity of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances: Provided that the said immunity from prosecution may be withdrawn if the addict does not undergo the complete treatment for de-addiction.]

Even when the police knows it, it rarely invokes it. The parents of the drug addict of the drug addict himself is generally not aware of this immunity.

Sir i think over exposure to media and over advertisement of various bars and showing it to be normal in serials and movies is also responsible ,as children think this is normal. They start with simple alcohol beer etc and then go to other drugs under peer pressure.

Surely a factor......but does not explain the susceptibility of the poor and lower-income groups to addiction.

Drug addiction is major problem for our youth .Lack of education in villages is another point . Government only can’t help , although they are doing their best . Need doctors to help & Government should open more institutions . Thanks , KBS, your are great support for the youth as you are suggesting remedies .

The fact of the matter is that we have got very few psychologists to take care of this massive problem.

The medical profession does not regard them as doctors, and accordingly the patients also do not have much faith in them.

I think the major reason for drug addiction is illiteracy in rural Punjab and unemployment

People are "Vella"and don't know what to do with their lives

Job opportunities are minimal and most youth are unemployable

Youth seeing that their friends and relatives are doing great in Canada and other countries just accentuates their frustration

Years of militancy and presumed instability has prevented large corporates to set up industries in the region

Farmers agitation has unfortunately accentuated this problem and no jobs are being created

It is a socioeconomic problem and law and order agencies can do only that much and not completely eradicate this menace IMO

What you say is correct but drug addiction is equally rampant among students of very good institutions. And, Chandigarh is no exception.

मै drug sellers से पंगा ले के पछताया......2 times they attacked plus lovely remarks i used to hear....धेर धेर के वढना ....टोटे टोटे करने for 2 - 3 years i stopped stepping out of my house out of fear of conflict , late evenings they used to openly brandished swords & stood outside my house , or they would form a group and adopted cornering tactics...staring pass comments, instigating gestures, threats - police knows it... as i was in touch with officials during that period but for 3 - 4 years i had to live with great caution police officers of my area certainly supported but it was great mess a great disturbance to stop addicts @ God saved me

Really very alarming situation.

Most of the people living in places like Chandigarh, do not realise how bad the situation is in some pockets in major urban centres of Punjab, including Amritsar.

it's a serious concern equally imp is management of drug peddling as per Dr RS Deswal HOD Psychiatry CMC Hospital...these addicts do not return back to normal even after de addiction once hooked to heroine or cocaine return is rarely possible. Help of psychiatrists must be taken to find solution to menace of drugs , petty crimes - yes to buy their daily dose these addicts under influence of drugs become bold do snatching , thefts , weekly Ransoms patronized by local politicians exhibit groups or act in groups after returning from jail having no education no income source or do not want to do job take to drug selling which fetches them good money gradually it becomes their occupation they get bailed out by kingpins or suppliers who supply them for supply it's a deep nexus....what i have observed is regular police patrolling 24 hour watch by police acts as strong deterrent to these sellers / security signatures of their family members acts as pressure, frequent police raids / search operations also thwart their activity ...complex but an issue which certainly needs focus as it has spread and eating into lives ....as observed in my neighborhood
