Eighth Pauri of the Second Ashtapadi
Introduction
As this Ashtapadi draws to a close, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Nanak, concludes his teachings with divine metaphors, comparing the Naam to the Parijat tree and the Kaamadhenu cow — legendary bestowers of wishes. However, the Guru does not seek fantasy fulfilment. He declares with conviction that nothing in existence equals the Naam. In the realm of the Saints, pain dissolves, evil departs, and wisdom is cultivated. But only the rare Gurmukh, graced by great fortune, truly receives this divine treasure.
Pauri
ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥
<i>Paarjaaṫ ih har ko naam</i>
Translation: The Name of the Lord is like the divine wish-fulfilling tree.
Hindi Transliteration: पारजातु इहु हरि को नाम।ਕਾਮਧੇਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥
<i>Kaamḋʰén har har guṇ gaam</i>
Translation: Singing Har, Har’s (the Almighty Akaal Purakh) praises is the divine cow that fulfils all longings.
Hindi Transliteration: कामधेन हरि हरि गुण गाम।ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ॥
<i>Sabʰ ṫé ooṫam har kee kaṫʰaa</i>
Translation: The speech (or story) of the Lord is the highest and most exalted.
Hindi Transliteration: सभ ते ऊतम हरि की कथा।ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਲਥਾ ॥
<i>Naam sunaṫ ḋaraḋ ḋukʰ laṫʰaa</i>
Translation: Hearing the Naam, pain and sorrow are washed away.
Hindi Transliteration: नामु सुनत दरद दुख लथा।ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸੰਤ ਰਿਦ ਵਸੈ ॥
<i>Naam kee mahimaa sanṫ riḋ vasæ</i>
Translation: The glory of the Naam dwells in the hearts of the Saints.
Hindi Transliteration: नाम की महिमा संत रिद वसै।ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਦੁਰਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਨਸੈ ॥
<i>Sanṫ parṫaap ḋuraṫ sabʰ nasæ</i>
Translation: By the saint’s grace, all evil is dispelled.
Hindi Transliteration: संत प्रतापि दुरतु सभु नसै।ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
<i>Sanṫ kaa sang vadbʰaagee paa▫ee▫æ</i>
Translation: The company of Saints is found only through great good fortune.
Hindi Transliteration: संत का संगु वडभागी पाईऐ।ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
<i>Sanṫ kee sévaa naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ</i>
Translation: Serving the Saints, one is led to meditate on the Naam.
Hindi Transliteration: संत की सेवा नामु धिआईऐ।ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਕਛੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
<i>Naam ṫul kachʰ avar na ho▫é</i>
Translation: There is nothing else that comes even close in comparison to the Naam.
Hindi Transliteration: नाम तुलि कछु अवरु न होइ।ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
<i>Naanak gurmukʰ naam paavæ jan ko▫é. ||8||2||</i>
Translation: O Nanak! Only a rare servant, through the Guru’s guidance, attains the Naam. ||8||2||
Hindi Transliteration: नानक गुरमुखि नामु पावै जनु कोइ ॥८॥२॥
Essence
This final Pauri of the Second Ashtapadi is a poetic and theological crescendo. Guru Arjan Dev Ji lifts the reader from conceptual understanding to spiritual awe. Comparing the Naam to the Parijat tree and the Kaamadhenu cow, he invokes traditional symbols of wish-fulfilling abundance — but here, they point to something far deeper: the ultimate fulfilment of the soul’s longing.
The Naam is supreme — more exalted than any scripture, more healing than any balm. Just hearing it removes sorrow. When it dwells in the heart of a Saint, that soul becomes a lighthouse of liberation. Through their grace (sant prataap), darkness vanishes, and by their companionship (sangat), the seeker is drawn to meditative love.
But such access is rare. The Guru reminds us: only through great fortune (vadbhaag) and becoming a Gurmukh — one who faces the Guru and follows divine wisdom — does one attain the Naam. And when that happens, there is nothing else to seek.

ਆਪੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਾਜਿਓ ਆਪੀਨੈ ਰਚਿਓ ਨਾਉ ।। ਦੁਯੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਾਜੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਆਸਣਿ ਡਿਠੋ ਚਾਓ ।।
ਧੰਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਂਰਾਜ ਨੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਸਵਰੂਪ ਦਾ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਂਮ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾਂ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਇੱਕ ਹਨ। ਨਾਂਮ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਨਾਂਮ ਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਚਮ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਨੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਜਪਣ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਵਰਨਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿੱਧੂ ਸਾਬ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਉੱਤਮ ਕਾਰਜ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ। ਆਪ ਜੁੜ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ । ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਮ ਹੈ। ਬਾਕੀ ਸੱਭ ਨਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਹੈ। ਸਮਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਚ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਵਾਨ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਤਰਕਵਾਦੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਪੜਨ, ਸੁਣਨ , ਸਮਝਣ ਅਤੇ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਹੈ। ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਤਾਕਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਤਰਕ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ । ਖੱਟਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੇ ਮੰਨਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਯਕੀਨਨ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਯਤਨ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ੜਨ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਸੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਣਗੇ।
