Introduction to Pauri 3
In this pauri, Guru Arjan Dev Ji highlights the spiritual wealth and inner joy of those rare devotees who are attuned to the Naam (Divine Name). He draws a vivid contrast between worldly fortunes and true prosperity, which lies in meditating on, singing of, and realizing the One Lord. The Guru affirms that those who live in remembrance of the Formless Creator are indeed the blessed ones who understand both this world and the hereafter.
ਪਉੜੀ ੩ (Pauri 3)
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
बडभागी ते जन जग माहि ॥
Badbʰaagee ṫé jan jag maahi.
Very fortunate are those humble beings in this world,
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
सदा सदा हरि के गुन गाहि ॥
Saḋaa saḋaa har ké gun gaahi.
who forever and ever sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜੋ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
राम नाम जो करहि बीचार ॥
Raam naam jo karahi beechaar.
Those who contemplate the Name of the Lord,
ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਗਨੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
से धनवंत गनी संसार ॥
Sé ḋʰanvanṫ ganee sansaar.
are considered truly wealthy and honoured in this world.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖੀ ॥
मनि तनि मुखि बोलहि हरि मुखी ॥
Man ṫan mukʰ bolėh har mukʰee.
They speak of the Supreme Lord with mind, body and mouth.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੀ ॥
सदा सदा जानहु ते सुखी ॥
Saḋaa saḋaa jaanhu ṫé sukʰee.
Know that such people are ever in bliss.
ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥
एको एकु एकु पछानै ॥
Éko ék ék pachʰaanæ.
One who realizes the One Lord to be the only Eternal One,
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਕੀ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
इत उत की ओहु सोझी जानै ॥
Iṫ uṫ kee oh sojʰee jaanæ.
gains the wisdom of both this world and the world beyond.
ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
नाम संगि जिस का मनु मानिआ ॥
Naam sang jis kaa man maani▫aa.
One whose mind has embraced the Naam with love and devotion,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥
नानक तिनहि निरंजनु जानिआ ॥३॥
Naanak ṫinėh niranjan jaani▫aa. ||3||
O Nanak! That person comes to know the Immaculate, Formless Lord. ||3||
ਅਰਥ / Essence
This pauri beautifully portrays the exalted spiritual stature of those who cherish the Lord’s Name. Guru Arjan Dev Ji equates true fortune with unwavering devotion. Such souls, constantly engaged in divine remembrance through body, mind, and speech, are eternally at peace. Their prosperity is not measured in wealth but in divine awareness. Understanding the Oneness of God leads to understanding both temporal life and spiritual truth. Those whose consciousness rests in the Naam experience the realisation of the Niranjan—the Pure, Formless One.

ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹਨ। ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂਮ (ਨਾਂਮ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂਮੀਂ) ਇੱਕ ਹਨ ਇਸੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਨਾਂਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵੀ ਨਾਂਮ ਦੇ ਦਾਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਧੰਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹਨ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਂਮ ( ਦੋਵੇਂ ਇੱਕ) , ਨਾਂਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰੇ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਹੀਣ ਸਾਕਤ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਰਣਨ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਾਕਤ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਨਾਂਮ ਤੋਂ ਟੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਬਿਖਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਮੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਮੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੰਗਣ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਇਸੇ ਵਾਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਭੇਦਤਾ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਂ ਦਾਨ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਜੀ।
