"I Will Not Resign – SGPC Is Free to Sack Me": Giani Harpreet Singh
Will the SGPC remove him by convening an emergent meeting of the Executive Committee as soon as tomorrow?
I Will Not Resign – SGPC Is Free to Sack Me: Giani Harpreet Singh
The ongoing controversy surrounding Giani Harpreet Singh, the Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, has taken a dramatic turn as he firmly declared he will not resign voluntarily. Instead, he has put the ball in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s (SGPC) court, stating they are free to terminate his services if they deem fit. Giani Harpreet Singh was speaking with mediapersons in Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district today .
A Controversial Statement Sparks Debate
The controversy began with a conversation on October 15 involving Giani Harpreet Singh and former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha, since expelled from Shiromani Akali Dal for ten years. A 27-second clip of the discussion, where the Jathedar used the term "Sala-Sali," was released, causing some outrage. Critics accused him of using inappropriate, even abusive, language, sparking debates about his continued suitability for the revered position.
Giani Harpreet Singh defended his remarks, asserting that the language reflects the informal conversational style of his Malwai community. He lamented the selective release of the clip, pointing out that the full video, lasting 1.5 hours, provides necessary context.
“I challenge anyone to release the entire video. Once people hear the full conversation, they will understand why stricter action should have been taken against Valtoha,” he stated. He also wondered how this video was leaked since it was a part of the official record of the secretariat of the SGPC.
Tensions Over December 2 Decisions
Adding to the controversy is the ongoing debate over decisions made by the Panj Singh Sahibs on December 2. Giani Harpreet Singh has categorically stated that he will not participate in any meetings aimed at revising these decisions.
“If there is any move to change the decisions of December 2, I will not attend such discussions,” he declared. This stance further complicates his already strained relationship with the SGPC leadership.
A Resignation or a Removal?
Two months ago, Giani Harpreet Singh submitted his resignation. However, it remains unaccepted. Clarifying his position, he stated, “I have already vacated my accommodation at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib. Only my children’s relocation remains. If the SGPC wishes to terminate my services, they are free to do so.”
This statement has fuelled speculation about whether the SGPC will convene an emergent meeting to resolve the matter. Observers believe the Executive Committee could deliberate as early as tomorrow to deliberate on the question of removal of Giani Harpreet Singh.
Authority of the Jathedar Under Question
The controversy has also raised questions about the authority of Sikh leadership. Giani Harpreet Singh defended the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s decision to extend deadlines for Shiromani Akali Dal leaders to resign. However, this move has not sat well with some factions, who view it as evidence of compromised leadership.
Community Divided, Calls for Transparency Grow
The Sikh community remains divided over the issue. While some politically motivated demand the immediate removal of Giani Harpreet Singh, a broader cross-section support his call for the release of the full video to ensure transparency. The selective release of the clip has been criticized as an attempt at character assassination.
“The attack on my integrity is unjust,” he said. “I have always acted in the community’s best interest.”
What Lies Ahead for the SGPC?
The SGPC now faces a critical decision. Will it act swiftly to remove Giani Harpreet Singh, or will it adopt a wait-and-watch approach? An emergent meeting of the Executive Committee could determine whether his tenure ends abruptly or continues amid ongoing controversies.
The coming days will likely see intensified debates, with the Sikh community and leadership grappling with questions of accountability, transparency, and authority in one of its highest offices.

These politicians of Akali Dal, in their lust for power, like AAP, BJP or Congress have tainted our sacred institutions. Both SGPC and Akal Takht remain in news for all the reasons except for the well being of Panth. Giani ji knows that SGPC itself uses same language as him, probably such abusive language is the norm among these leaders. Unfortunate, that they represent leadership of our Panth which was rescued from Mahants for the corrupt practices over a 100 years ago. Looks like time now to free the panth again from the corrupt and tainted institutions. It is foolish and nonsense to push the point that politics and religion will go together. SGPC/Akal Takht and Akali Dal have to be two separate entities. Leadership should know that not all Sikhs vote for Akalis. Also, not everyone who votes for Akalis is a Sikh.
