The origin of the festival of Karva Chauth
The Wise Owl, the carrier (“wahan”) of Goddess Lakshmi, was both sad and disappointed.
“Mateshwari!”, he rued, “while the whole world worships you, no one even pauses to give me a second look even though I am the one that carries you to each and every household that you choose to bless.”
The generous Goddess pondered and finally spake as follows: “You have been very hard-working and loyal, O Worthy Owl, I bless thee! Henceforth, one day in the year, exactly ten days after Dussehra, the entire world shall be dedicated to the Worship of Owls.”
Thus began the tradition, the custom, the practice and the festival of “Karva Chauth”.
