DEATH AND SURVIVORS
Alan Greenspan, the most influential central banker of his era, died on Monday at the age of 100 at his Washington home, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. His death was confirmed by his wife of 29 years, NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell, who described him as “a giant of a man who helped shape the US economy for decades under presidents of both parties, but was always honest in acknowledging his mistakes.” In a tribute that captured the private man behind the public oracle, she recalled that he had brought the same “irrational exuberance” to baseball, the Washington Commanders, tennis, golf, and music — especially jazz — that he had once famously warned markets against. He is survived by Andrea Mitchell, along with extended family and a wide circle of professional colleagues and protégés shaped by his long career in public life. As he had no children, his personal legacy is carried through his writings, public speeches, and the institutions he influenced.
The Federal Reserve, in an institutional tribute, said Greenspan’s “contributions to monetary policy and economic thought left a lasting mark on this institution, on the broader field of economics, and on the country,” adding that his legacy endures “in those he mentored directly, in the economists and public servants he inspired, and in the frameworks and practices he helped shape.” The Fed extended its deepest condolences to Andrea Mitchell and his family. No statement was forthcoming from the White House — perhaps unsurprisingly, given that as recently as January 2026, Greenspan had been among the signatories of a joint statement by former Fed Chairs and senior economists condemning the Trump administration’s criminal investigation into then-Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as “an unprecedented attempt to use prosecutorial attacks to undermine” the central bank’s independence.
EARLY LIFE AND UPBRINGING
Greenspan was born on 6 March 1926 in New York City and grew up in the Washington Heights neighbourhood of Manhattan. He was the only child of Herbert Greenspan, a stockbroker and market analyst, and Rose (Goldsmith) Greenspan; his parents divorced when he was young, and he was largely raised by his mother.
From an early age he showed unusual aptitude in mathematics, reportedly reciting baseball statistics and doing complex calculations in his head by the age of five. He also developed a strong interest in music, which became his first serious vocation before economics fully claimed him.
EDUCATION AND EARLY CAREER
As a young man Greenspan studied music at the Juilliard School, playing tenor saxophone and clarinet, and toured the United States with the Henry Jerome jazz band. He later shifted to economics, enrolling at New York University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1948 and a master’s degree in 1950, both with distinction.
He began doctoral studies at Columbia University under Arthur F. Burns — who would later chair the Federal Reserve — but left before completing the programme to work as a professional economist. He joined the National Industrial Conference Board as an analyst and went on to co-found the economic consulting firm Townsend-Greenspan & Co., eventually becoming its president and principal owner. NYU later awarded him a PhD in economics in 1977, recognising both his academic work and his professional stature.
INTELLECTUAL INFLUENCES
Greenspan’s intellectual formation was strongly shaped by his association with the novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand, whom he met in 1952. He became part of Rand’s inner circle, absorbing her Objectivist philosophy — its radical individualism, laissez-faire capitalism, and deep scepticism of government intervention in markets.
This ideological orientation underpinned his long-standing belief in the self-correcting nature of markets and his preference for light-touch regulation throughout his public career. Those convictions would later be both praised for fostering innovation and criticised for enabling the excesses that contributed to financial instability.
PUBLIC SERVICE BEFORE THE FED
Long before he became synonymous with the Federal Reserve, Greenspan moved in and out of government while maintaining his consulting career. He advised Richard Nixon’s 1968 presidential campaign and later served on various presidential task forces. From 1974 to 1977, he chaired President Gerald Ford’s Council of Economic Advisers, where he advocated disinflationary policies that helped reduce US inflation from double-digit levels. In the early 1980s he chaired the National Commission on Social Security Reform, playing a central role in the bipartisan package that stabilised Social Security’s finances and further enhanced his reputation as a pragmatic policy broker.
CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE
Greenspan was appointed chair of the Federal Reserve Board in 1987, succeeding Paul Volcker, and served until 2006 across the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. His first major test came almost immediately: the October 1987 stock market crash, during which his prompt assurances of liquidity support were widely credited with preventing a broader financial panic.
During the long expansion of the 1990s, his Fed presided over low inflation, falling unemployment, and a booming technology sector, cementing his reputation as “the Maestro” of monetary policy. His handling of episodes such as the Asian financial crisis and the Long-Term Capital Management rescue further reinforced the perception that the Fed could contain systemic shocks with measured, technically sophisticated interventions. And it was in December 1996, at the height of this bull run, that he issued his most memorable caution — asking whether irrational exuberance had unduly inflated asset values. The markets shuddered; then pressed on regardless.
CONTROVERSIES AND POST-CRISIS REASSESSMENT
Yet many of the policy choices made under Greenspan’s leadership became the subject of intense criticism after the global financial crisis of 2008. Prolonged low interest rates in the early 2000s, a strong bias towards deregulation, and reluctance to rein in speculative excesses — particularly in housing and complex financial derivatives — were cited as factors that amplified vulnerabilities in the financial system.
In testimony before the US Congress after the crisis, Greenspan acknowledged that he had discovered a “flaw” in his long-held belief that financial markets would reliably police themselves — an admission that became emblematic of the broader rethinking of pre-crisis orthodoxy. Scholars and practitioners have since debated whether his errors lay in misjudging specific risks, in overconfidence about market discipline, or in a broader ideological commitment that constrained regulatory imagination.
FAMILY AND PRIVATE LIFE
Greenspan’s first marriage, to Joan Mitchell in 1952, was short-lived and annulled the following year. Decades later, he began a relationship with Andrea Mitchell, an NBC News correspondent; they married in 1997 after more than a decade together, in a ceremony officiated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The couple had no children. Friends and associates often described him as reserved in public but sociable in private, combining a dry wit with a penchant for data-driven conversation.
LEGACY AND HISTORICAL JUDGEMENT
Greenspan’s legacy is fundamentally ambivalent. He is credited with helping deliver the longest economic expansion in modern US history, while also being blamed for contributing to the conditions that made the 2008 crisis so severe. Supporters emphasise his steady hand in crises, his defence of central bank independence, and his capacity to integrate data analysis with nuanced judgements about market psychology. Critics underscore his ideological tilt towards deregulation, his scepticism of tighter oversight of banks and derivatives, and his reluctance to treat asset bubbles as policy concerns — choices they argue entrenched a culture that privileged market freedom over financial stability.
Nonetheless, his tenure helped embed a model of transparent, communication-driven central banking, in which forward guidance and carefully calibrated public statements became essential tools of monetary policy. As one former Fed official observed, the deification that came just before the financial crisis was never fully deserved — and neither was the lambasting that followed.
Seen in the round, Alan Greenspan’s life traces the arc of late twentieth-century capitalism: a New York prodigy who moved from jazz bands to the commanding heights of global finance, from Ayn Rand’s salons to the Federal Reserve’s boardroom. He leaves behind a record in which technical virtuosity and ideological conviction produced both remarkable stability and profound vulnerability, ensuring that his name will remain central to debates about the power and limits of central banking for decades to come.
