Sukhmani Sahib – Ashtpadi 8, Pauri 3
🔷 Introductory Note:
In this pauri, Guru Arjan Dev Ji elaborates on the internal qualities, spiritual practice, and benevolent presence of the Brahm Giani. Not only is such a being elevated and enlightened, but they are also deeply compassionate, detached, and utterly immersed in divine awareness.
🏵 Verse 1
Gurmukhi:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी सगल की रीना ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee sagal kee reenaa.
English Translation: The God-conscious being is the dust of all.
🏵 Verse 2
Gurmukhi:
ਆਤਮ ਰਸੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): आतम रसु ब्रहम गिआनी चीना ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Āṫam ras barahm gi▫aanee cheenaa.
English Translation: The God-conscious being has realised the essence of the soul.

Gurmukhi:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਇਆ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी की सभ ऊपरि मइआ ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee kee sabh oopar ma▫i▫aa.
English Translation: The God-conscious being shows compassion to all.

Gurmukhi:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਭਇਆ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी ते कछु बुरा न भइआ ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee ṫé kachh buraa na bhai▫aa.
English Translation: No harm or evil comes from the God-conscious being.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी सदा समदरसी ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee sadā samdarsī.
English Translation: The God-conscious being always sees all as equal.

Gurmukhi:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਰਸੀ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी की द्रिसटि अमृतु बरसी ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee kee ḍrisṭ amriṭ barsī.
English Translation: The gaze of the God-conscious being showers nectar.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी बंधन ते मुकता ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee banḍhan ṫé mukṫā.
English Translation: The God-conscious being is free from worldly bonds.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी की निरमल जुगता ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee kee nirmal jugṫā.
English Translation: The lifestyle of the God-conscious being is utterly pure.

Gurmukhi:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): ब्रहम गिआनी का भोजनु गिआन ॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Barahm gi▫aanee kā bhojan gi▫ān.
English Translation: Spiritual wisdom is the food of the God-conscious being.

Gurmukhi:
ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੩॥
Hindi Transliteration (Devanagari): नानक ब्रहम गिआनी का ब्रहम धिआनु ॥३॥
English Transliteration (Italicised): Nānak barahm gi▫aanee kā barahm ḍhi▫ān. ||3||
English Translation: O Nanak, the God-conscious being meditates on the Divine. ||3||
🪔 Essence of the Pauri:
This pauri reveals the inner depth and outer expression of a Brahm Giani’s life. Such a soul is humble like dust, yet spiritually awakened. They embody universal compassion, cause no harm, and view all beings with equal vision. Their presence radiates peace and healing. Unbound by worldly ties, their way of life is pure, sustained by divine knowledge, and anchored in continuous meditation on the Supreme. Their existence is not self-driven, but aligned with the highest spiritual awareness and service to all.
