Seventh Ashtapadi – Pauri 5

Introduction

In this pauri, Guru Arjan Dev Ji extols the boundless blessings one receives through Saadh Sangat—the holy congregation. The Guru asserts that not only is the individual uplifted, but the entire family, friends, and even the broader spiritual ecosystem are benefitted. Sins flee, divine virtues blossom, and the soul gains divine wealth that serves all. The power of this companionship is so immense that even celestial beings rejoice in it. Ultimately, life itself is deemed fruitful when spent in the Company of the Holy.

1. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਭ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥
   साध कै संगि सभ कुल उधारै ॥
   Sāḋh kai sang sabh kul uḋẖāræ.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, all one’s family is saved.

2. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੀਤ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥
   साधसंगि साजन मीत कुट्मब निसतारै ॥
   Sāḋhsang sājan meeṯ kuṭamb nisṯāræ.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one’s friends, companions, and relatives are liberated.

3. ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
   साधू कै संगि सो धनु पावै ॥
   Sāḋhū kai sang so ḋʰan pāvɛ.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one obtains that true wealth,

4. ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਵਰਸਾਵੈ ॥
   जिसु धन ते सभु को वरसावै ॥
   Jis ḋʰan ṯe sabh ko varsāvɛ.
   Translation: from which all others are spiritually enriched.

5. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
   साधसंगि धरम राइ करे सेवा ॥
   Sāḋhsang ḋʰaram rā▫é karé sévā.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, even Dharam Raj, the Lord of Justice, serves in reverence.

6. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਸੁਰਦੇਵਾ ॥
   साध कै संगि सोभा सुरदेवा ॥
   Sāḋh kai sang sobʰā surḋevā.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, even celestial beings sing praises.

7. ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪ ਪਲਾਇਨ ॥
   साधू कै संगि पाप पलाइन ॥
   Sāḋhū kai sang pāp palā▫in.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, sins flee away.

8. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇਨ ॥
   साधसंगि अमृत गुन गाइन ॥
   Sāḋhsang amriṯ gun gā▫in.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one sings the nectar-like praises of the Lord.

9. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਥਾਨ ਗੰਮਿ ॥
   साध कै संगि स्रब थान गंमि ॥
   Sāḋh kai sang sarab ṯʰān gamm.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, all spiritual realms become accessible.

10. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਫਲ ਜਨੰਮ ॥੫॥
    नानक साध कै संगि सफल जनंम ॥५॥
    Nānak sāḋh kai sang safal janam. ||5||
    Translation: O Nanak! In the Company of the Holy, life becomes truly fruitful. ||5||

Essence of Pauri 5

Guru Arjan Dev Ji continues the resounding praise of Saadh Sangat, highlighting its ripple effect across one's life and relationships. Not only does the seeker benefit, but their entire lineage, friends, and society are elevated. In such a holy presence, sins are washed away, and divine wealth—the treasure of God's Name—is obtained and shared. Even celestial beings honour this association. The mind becomes refined, the speech blessed, and the journey of life complete. To dwell in such company is the pinnacle of grace, and through it, one’s life finds true meaning.
