Seventh Ashtapadi – Pauri 2

Introduction

The second pauri continues Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s exaltation of the Saadh Sangat (Holy Congregation). It highlights how this spiritual company becomes the vessel for divine union, stillness of mind, and the flowering of true virtues. The soul immersed in such association experiences the nectar of Naam, detachment from Maya, and a profound inner transformation. Not only are the five passions subdued, but even God becomes pleased with those absorbed in the Saadh Sangat. This pauri is a rich map of spiritual ascent through holy association.

1. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
   साध कै संगि अगोचरु मिलै ॥
   Sādh kai sang agochar milai.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one meets the Incomprehensible Lord.

2. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਫੁਲੈ ॥
   साध कै संगि सदा परफुलै ॥
   Sādh kai sang sadā parfulei.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one flourishes forever.

3. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਸਿ ਪੰਚਾ ॥
   साध कै संगि आवहि बसि पंचा ॥
   Sādh kai sang āvahi bas panchā.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, the five passions are brought under control.

4. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਭੁੰਚਾ ॥
   साधसंगि अमृत रसु भुंचा ॥
   Sādhsang amrit ras bʰuncha.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one enjoys the ambrosial essence.

5. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਭ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ॥
   साधसंगि होइ सभ की रेन ॥
   Sādhsang hoi sabh kee ren.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one becomes the dust of all—humble and self-effacing.

6. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਬੈਨ ॥
   साध कै संगि मनोहर बैन ॥
   Sādh kai sang manohar bain.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one speaks beautifully and truthfully.

7. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
   साध कै संगि न कतहूं धावै ॥
   Sādh kai sang na katahūⁿ dhāvai.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, the mind no longer runs aimlessly.

8. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਸਥਿਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
   साधसंगि असथिति मनु पावै ॥
   Sādhsang asthit man pāvai.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, the mind gains stability and stillness.

9. ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ॥
   साध कै संगि माइआ ते भिंन ॥
   Sādh kai sang māiā te bʰinn.
   Translation: In the Company of the Holy, one becomes detached from Maya (worldly illusion).

10. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥੨॥
    साधसंगि नानक प्रभ सुप्रसंन ॥२॥
    Sādhsang Nānak prabh suprasan. ||2||
    Translation: In the Company of the Holy, O Nanak! God becomes thoroughly pleased. ||2||

Essence of Pauri 2

This pauri extols the supreme sanctity and spiritual benefits of associating with the saints. Guru Arjan Dev Ji vividly illustrates that the Saadh Sangat is the transformative environment where union with the Incomprehensible Lord occurs, ego dissolves, desires subside, and speech becomes pure and impactful. The restless mind finds calm, Maya’s delusion fades, and even the deeply embedded vices submit. Most significantly, the grace of this holy company makes one pleasing to God Himself.
