Introduction to Pauri 7

In this seventh pauri, Guru Arjan Dev Ji continues his tender yet firm call to the human mind, urging it to wake up to the truth of Divine Grace. Every blessing—fame, success, fulfillment, wisdom—is gifted by the Lord. The mind, forgetful in its arrogance and attachments, is here addressed directly. The Guru instructs it to recognize the Giver of all accomplishments and cling to His remembrance in gratitude and devotion.

Pauri 7 – Line-by-Line

1. ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
   जिह प्रसादि तूं प्रगटु संसारि ॥
   Jih parsāḋ ṯooⁿ pargaṭ sansār.
   Translation: By His Grace, you are famous and well-known all over the world;

2. ਤਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ॥
   तिसु प्रभ कउ मूलि न मनहु बिसारि ॥
   Ṫis parabʰ ka▫o mool na manhu bisār.
   Translation: Never forget or detach that God from your mind.

3. ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥
   जिह प्रसादि तेरा परतापु ॥
   Jih parsāḋ ṯérā partāp.
   Translation: By His Grace, you have prestige;

4. ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੂੜ ਤੂ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਜਾਪੁ ॥
   रे मन मूड़ तू ता कउ जापु ॥
   Ré man mooṛ ṯoo ṯā ka▫o jāp.
   Translation: O foolish mind, meditate on Him!

5. ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
   जिह प्रसादि तेरे कारज पूरे ॥
   Jih parsāḋ ṯéré kāraj poore.
   Translation: By His Grace, your works are completed or accomoplished;

6. ਤਿਸਹਿ ਜਾਨੁ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥
   तिसहि जानु मन सदा हजूरे ॥
   Ṫisėh jaan man sadā hajūré.
   Translation: O mind, know that He is always with you, in immediate vicinity.

7. ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੂੰ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ॥
   जिह प्रसादि तूं पावहि साचु ॥
   Jih parsāḋ ṯooⁿ pāvahi sāch.
   Translation: By His Grace, you find the Truth;

8. ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਚੁ ॥
   रे मन मेरे तूं ता सिउ राचु ॥
   Ré man mére ṯooⁿ ṯā si▫o rāch.
   Translation: O my mind, be absorbed in Him, as if miscible.

9. ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
   जिह प्रसादि सभ की गति होइ ॥
   Jih parsāḋ sabh kee gaṯ ho▫é.
   Translation: By His Grace, all beings attain liberation;

10. ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਪੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥
    नानक जापु जपै जपु सोइ ॥७॥
    Nānak jāp japai jap so▫é. ||7||
    Translation: O Nanak! Meditate and repeat the Chant of the Lord. ||7||

Essence of Pauri 7

This pauri is a loving yet urgent appeal to the wandering mind, reminding it of all the honors, happiness, and realizations bestowed by Divine Benevolence. Guru Ji insists that the root of all fame, success, and even spiritual wisdom lies in God's Grace—so why should one ever forget the Source? By turning inward in loving devotion and continual remembrance (jaap), the soul becomes attuned to its ultimate truth and goal. Let the mind awaken from its slumber and grasp the One who is always present, always near.
