After the meeting, Sundar Pichai commended (see video) Prime Minister Modi’s unwavering focus on transforming India through digital innovation. PM Modi's Digital India vision, which emphasises local manufacturing and innovation, has inspired global tech leaders. Pichai highlighted the success of this vision, noting Google's decision to manufacture Pixel phones in India as a major step in strengthening the nation's electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
“The PM has been focused on transforming India with his Digital India vision. He pushed us to continue making in India, designing in India,” said Pichai, underscoring Modi’s emphasis on creating a technology-driven future for India.
AI: A Key to India's Future
A major focus of the roundtable was the application of AI to benefit the Indian population. PM Modi challenged tech leaders to think about how AI can be leveraged in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. Pichai acknowledged Modi’s forward-thinking approach, noting the Prime Minister's commitment to ensuring that AI serves the people of India.
“He has a clear vision that AI should ultimately serve the people of India,” Pichai stated. Google is investing heavily in AI solutions, including developing an AI model that can handle over 100 Indian languages, making technology more accessible to India's diverse population.
Strengthening India’s Technological Infrastructure
In addition to AI, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the need for India to develop a robust technological infrastructure. This includes building data centres, enhancing power and energy systems, and creating a digital ecosystem capable of supporting the country’s ambitions. Pichai echoed PM Modi’s commitment to infrastructure development, stressing Google's partnership with the Indian government in these areas.
“He is also thinking about the infrastructure of India—data centres, power, energy—and investing to make sure India can transition,” Pichai remarked, highlighting Google's plans to continue supporting India's technological growth.
Google’s Continued Investment in India
As part of its commitment to India's digital transformation, Google reaffirmed its $10 billion India Digitization Fund (IDF), which aims to fuel digital growth across the country over the next decade. This investment is poised to further boost India's position as a global digital economy leader, creating new opportunities for innovation and economic development.
Additionally, Google has partnered with IIT Madras to establish a multidisciplinary centre for responsible AI. This initiative will focus on ensuring the ethical and socially responsible development of AI in India, maximising the benefits of technology while mitigating risks.
Modi’s Call for Deeper Global Partnerships
Prime Minister Modi's message to global tech leaders was clear: India is open for business and ready to deepen partnerships with the world’s leading companies. He urged tech giants like Google to expand their operations in India and take advantage of the country’s emerging markets. Modi’s forward-thinking leadership aims to create a more inclusive and empowered society, where technology plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between urban and rural populations.
Pichai expressed his excitement about the future of AI in India, stating, “He has always challenged us to do more for India, and now he is asking us to do the same with AI. We are proud to be partnering with India and look forward to doing more.”
Looking Forward: A Promising Future for India and Google
This roundtable discussion underscored the strong and growing partnership between India and global tech companies like Google. As AI technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, India stands at the forefront of this transformation, with companies like Google leading the charge.
With Google's leadership in data centres, AI software including the highly anticipated Gemini AI, and Modi’s clear vision for digital transformation, the future looks bright for India’s tech landscape. Together, India and Google are poised to create a mutually beneficial partnership that will not only revolutionise India’s digital ecosystem but also contribute to the global AI revolution.
In the context of the exploding AI landscape, this collaboration holds immense promise. By investing in cutting-edge technologies, Google, under Modi’s visionary leadership, will continue to drive innovation, growth, and prosperity—paving the way for a new era of digital excellence.
