Very informative piece. About 20 years back we used to have discussions on this self sufficiency source of energy but then I lost track of the development in this sector. We must speed up work now to save on many fronts, pollution, self sufficiency , foreign exchange and energy security. Hope the dream comes true in reasonable time. It’s also hoped that safety measures from nuclear exposures are set in place. Our country deserves near and clean perennial source of energy without dislocating the people ; and thorium can be one the ways we can achieve this goal.
I have been involved with SMR’s for resource ( electricity and process heat) / smelting operations and data centres and as you have stated going for standardised designs is the key to Small Modular Nuclear Reactors Success (SMR sometimes means steam methane reforming so suggest using SMNR as in small modular nuclear reactor).
Safety is paramount for the program to be successful.
For safety initial first of its kind (FOAK) greenfield reactors can be placed on remote islands cabled to
Main land using HVDC. Brownfield projects are more complicated to handle as the infrastructure has to be redesigned from nuclear perspective.
With all this comes the regulatory policy on how to involve the private sector in delivering EPC projects.
SMNR can be used to develop nuclear powered submarines.

Thanks for reigniting my interest in this sector.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Karanbir for this well written article.
