Kejriwal’s Delhi Debacle: What Went Wrong for AAP?
With Delhi slipping away, AAP must re-evaluate its governance strategy. Instead of chasing expansionist dreams in other states, the focus must shift to delivering effective governance in Punjab.
Delhi Election 2025: AAP’s Setback and the Road Ahead
The 2025 Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections have delivered a stunning blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), marking a significant shift in the capital's political landscape. After nearly a decade of dominance, AAP has been decisively defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has surged past the majority mark to reclaim control over Delhi. While anti-incumbency was a major factor, several missteps by AAP contributed to this electoral downfall.
Where Did AAP Falter?
Promises vs. Performance – Kejriwal's governance model was built on high promises, often painting grand visions. However, delivery failed to meet the soaring expectations of Delhi voters. Golden mirages of free electricity, water, and top-tier education faced real-world limitations that voters could no longer ignore.
Basic Civic Services in Disarray – Water shortages, especially in poorer colonies, and the unchecked tanker mafia exposed governance inefficiencies. Blaming Haryana and the Central government for the water crisis did not convince voters, who expected solutions rather than excuses.
Sanitation and Waste Management Failures – AAP took full control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), yet the city remained plagued with mountains of garbage, clogged drains, and unhygienic conditions in jhuggi-jhopdi colonies. The failure to provide basic sanitation services severely dented its governance credentials.
Liquor Policy Scandal – The infamous Delhi Liquor Scam shattered AAP’s much-touted "kattar imaandaar" (hardcore honest) image. While the legal battle over the proceeds of crime is still ongoing, the 12% commission rate for wholesalers raised suspicions, damaging public trust.
Yamuna Cleaning Controversy – The ambitious cleaning of the Yamuna River turned into a fiasco. Accusations of poisoning by Haryana did not hold up against scientific evidence, and despite massive funds spent, BOD and ammonia levels continued to deteriorate, exposing governance failures.
Voter List Cleansing & Sanitation – The Election Commission's cleansing of ghost voters, ineligible names, and manipulated voter lists altered traditional vote bank dynamics, impacting AAP’s prospects.
BJP’s Well-Oiled Campaign – Unlike AAP’s fragmented messaging, the BJP ran a highly disciplined and strategic campaign, leveraging nationalistic sentiment, local governance failures, and strong organizational groundwork.
Sheesh Mahal Controversy – The revelation of Kejriwal’s lavish official residence, dubbed the "Sheesh Mahal", and his demand for Z+ security not just from Delhi but also Punjab, tarnished the "Aam Aadmi" (common man) image that had propelled him to power.
PR Hype vs. Ground Reality – Media optics and branding worked in AAP’s early years, but voters ultimately judged the party on ground realities. The stark contrast between hyped achievements and actual governance led to disenchantment.
Anti-Incumbency & The Double-Engine Pitch – Having ruled Delhi for over a decade, Kejriwal faced growing voter fatigue. The BJP’s promise of a "double-engine sarkar" (same party at the Center and state for better coordination) and its latest Union Budget relief for the middle class swayed urban voters.
Scrapping of Electoral Bonds – AAP’s fundraising was hit hard by the removal of anonymous electoral bonds, while cash movement was tightly monitored by the election authorities, limiting campaign resources.
Kejriwal’s Personal Defeat – Losing the New Delhi constituency was not just a political setback but a major blow to Kejriwal’s leadership standing. With AAP now weakened, Delhi may struggle to have a strong and credible Leader of the Opposition.
Swati Maliwal Factor & Women’s Disillusionment – The alleged mistreatment of Swati Maliwal alienated a crucial voter base—women. Her relentless campaign on issues like water quality, sanitation, and waste mismanagement resonated with women voters in poorer colonies, further pushing them away from AAP (video).
Unrealistic Cash Promises to Women – AAP initially promised ₹1,000 per month for women and later increased it to ₹2,100, but voters saw this as an election gimmick rather than a serious welfare measure. The lack of financial planning to back this promise further eroded credibility.
Back to Basics: The Road Ahead for AAP
With Delhi slipping away from Arvind Kejriwal and AAP, the party must regroup and re-evaluate its governance strategy. Instead of chasing expansionist dreams in other states, Kejriwal must refocus his leadership on delivering effective governance in Punjab, where AAP still holds power. The Punjab experiment is now crucial—if Kejriwal’s government can demonstrate tangible improvements in law and order, education, agriculture, and industrial growth, it may help AAP regain public trust and political relevance.
Kejriwal’s core appeal was built on the promise of clean, transparent, and people-centric governance. However, optics and aggressive PR alone cannot sustain electoral success. AAP now needs to return to basics—fix the governance challenges in Punjab, prioritize real development over hype, and work towards rebuilding its credibility. Only by providing effective and efficient guidance to the leadership in Punjab can Arvind Kejriwal and AAP hope for a political revival in Delhi and beyond.

Just name at least one from the BJP, please? None of our politicians is there to serve. Communal and divisive politics replaced secularistic ones. No role of money power, absolute control over media by the BJP to set a narrative of their choice or apparent silence of ECI and his team in allowing manipulative tools and his machinery. Veteran bureaucrats dare not openly say anything against the dysfunctional governance.
