Indian-origin chief executives of global technology giants have become symbols of a confident diaspora. Sundar Pichai (Google) and Satya Nadella (Microsoft) are household names. Their journeys are celebrated in business schools and drawing rooms from Bengaluru to Boston. Yet far less visible, and arguably more consequential for the future of warfare and state power, is another Indian-origin technologist: Shyam Sankar, the long-serving Chief Technology Officer of Palantir Technologies.
For nearly two decades, Sankar has been one of the most influential figures inside a company that sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, national security and geopolitical competition. If Silicon Valley once prided itself on building social networks and consumer gadgets, Palantir represents a different strand of technology — software built explicitly for war rooms, intelligence agencies and defence ministries. Its tools help governments integrate vast datasets, detect patterns, simulate operations and coordinate responses in real time. In a world of drone warfare, cyber operations and AI-assisted targeting, that capability is no longer peripheral; it is central.
For Indian readers — whether at home or in the diaspora — Sankar’s story is not merely another immigrant success narrative. It is a window into how Indian talent has embedded itself at the very core of the Western military–AI complex. And it prompts an uncomfortable question: why does India, despite its talk of digital sovereignty and AI leadership, not have a Palantir of its own?
From Mumbai to America’s Defence Frontier
Shyam Sankar was born in Mumbai in the early 1980s into a Tamil family that embodied the first-generation striver ethos. His father rose from modest beginnings in Tamil Nadu to study pharmacy, eventually moving to Lagos, Nigeria, to help run a pharmaceutical plant. That chapter ended abruptly after a violent robbery forced the family to leave. They eventually resettled in Orlando, Florida.
The American years were not cushioned by privilege. Sankar’s parents cycled through precarious small businesses, including a souvenir shop and a dry-cleaning venture that went bankrupt, before stabilising their finances. His mother worked as a cashier and later trained as a nurse; his father rebuilt his career in pharmacy through mail-order operations. The family’s trajectory was not linear ascent but repeated risk and recovery.
What deserves fuller attention, however, is the psychological and moral arc of that journey. Sankar’s childhood was not the curated immigrant success story that often accompanies Indian-American prominence. The family’s years in Lagos ended not in orderly migration but in trauma — a violent home invasion that forced an abrupt exit. In Florida, stability did not arrive automatically. Bankruptcy was not an abstraction but a lived humiliation. There were no elite preparatory schools smoothing the path. There were public classrooms, part-time work, and the quiet pressure familiar to many first-generation immigrant households: the sense that one’s success was not merely personal ambition but repayment of parental sacrifice. Sankar has spoken of watching his father rebuild his life a second time, absorbing the lesson that institutions matter — that societies either give you a chance to rise again, or they do not. This belief, more than technical brilliance alone, appears to have shaped his worldview.
There is another layer to his story that is less discussed but equally significant: identity and allegiance. Unlike many diaspora figures who maintain a visible, even performative connection to India, Sankar’s public posture has been resolutely American. His language is suffused with gratitude towards the United States; his arguments about defence and industrial revival are framed in terms of national survival. His decision to accept a commission as a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve was not merely symbolic — it was a declaration of belonging. For some in India, that may appear distant or even dissonant. Yet it reflects a generational shift within parts of the diaspora: children of immigrants who are not hyphenated in their loyalties but fully embedded in the strategic imagination of their adopted country. In Sankar’s case, the immigrant child who watched his parents rebuild from near ruin became a technologist determined to fortify the state that, in his telling, saved them. Whether one agrees with his politics or not, the coherence between biography and ideology is striking.
Academically, he followed an elite path: electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University, followed by a master’s degree at Stanford in management science and engineering. Yet his professional formation was less about lecture halls and more about writing code for his father’s fragile pharmacy business — building systems that had to work under real-world constraints. That pragmatic ethos later became core to Palantir’s culture.
He joined Palantir in 2006 as one of its earliest employees and became its first “forward-deployed engineer” — embedding with clients, including intelligence agencies and military units, and tailoring software to operational realities. Over the years, he rose to become Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, helping transform Palantir from an obscure start-up into a major defence technology firm.
What Palantir Actually Does
Palantir’s mystique often obscures its function. At its core, the company builds data integration platforms. Its government-facing product allows agencies to ingest and connect disparate data streams — from crime reports and immigration records to battlefield sensor feeds — and visualise relationships between entities. Its commercial platform performs similar work for corporations managing supply chains, factories and logistics networks. Underneath sits a deployment layer that enables secure updates across classified and commercial environments.
In practice, Palantir’s software has been used to track insurgent networks, coordinate counter-terrorism investigations, manage vaccine logistics and optimise industrial production. It operates simultaneously in the worlds of defence and commerce, with government contracts forming a substantial portion of its revenues.
This dual identity has made Palantir controversial. Supporters see it as a champion of liberal democracies in an age when authoritarian regimes deploy technology aggressively for state control. Critics argue that its tools risk enabling intrusive surveillance and expanding state power without adequate accountability.
Sankar has emerged as one of the intellectual architects of Palantir’s worldview. He argues that the United States and its allies face a historic challenge from China and Russia, and that Western industrial and defence systems have grown complacent. He has called for rapid reindustrialisation, technological acceleration and deeper collaboration between Silicon Valley and the military. His commissioning into the US Army Reserve symbolically fuses the identities of technologist and soldier.
Why This Matters to India
For Indian audiences, Sankar’s trajectory is relevant for at least three reasons.
First, it illustrates how the future of warfare is increasingly software-defined. The side that integrates data faster, deploys AI more effectively and adapts systems in real time gains decisive advantages. Conflicts today are not fought merely with artillery and armour, but with algorithms and data fusion platforms.
Second, it underscores how deeply diaspora talent has shaped Western strategic capacities. While India debates brain drain and reverse migration, many Indian-origin technologists are already integral to other nations’ defence ecosystems.
Third, it highlights the ethical dilemmas that accompany technological power. India is building expansive digital infrastructures — from biometric identity to integrated command centres. As data integration deepens, questions about privacy, accountability and state overreach will intensify. The debates surrounding Palantir offer a glimpse of the tensions India may face.
Why India Has No Palantir
India speaks confidently of digital sovereignty. We inaugurate new data centres, announce AI missions, and place semiconductor ambitions on the national pedestal. The Prime Minister has carried this technological message to global platforms too, most recently at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi. Yet for all the rhetoric and momentum, India still lacks a home-grown counterpart to Palantir — or even Anduril: a company rooted in national security, trusted by the armed forces, and able to build and deploy large-scale platforms that fuse data, sensors and decision-making into operational advantage.
The reasons are structural.
India’s defence procurement system remains slow, procedural and risk-averse. Start-ups struggle to navigate layers of bureaucracy and opaque tendering norms. Payment cycles are long; pilot projects rarely scale swiftly. Unlike the United States, India lacks a deeply institutionalised ecosystem where defence agencies routinely collaborate with emerging technology firms in iterative, high-trust partnerships.
There is also a cultural gap. In parts of Silicon Valley today, “defence tech” has regained legitimacy as a patriotic and commercially viable frontier. In India, the technology sector has largely oriented itself towards services exports, consumer platforms and enterprise software. Building mission-critical systems for war rooms and intelligence agencies requires not only engineering capability but also institutional intimacy and strategic clarity.
Capital is another constraint. Venture funding in India rarely backs companies whose primary client would be the armed forces or intelligence agencies. Without patient capital and predictable state demand, it is difficult to build a firm willing to endure long development cycles in pursuit of strategic capability.
Most importantly, digital sovereignty is not achieved merely by hosting data within national borders or announcing semiconductor missions. It requires mastery of the analytical and operational layers that sit atop that data — platforms that fuse information into decision-making power. India’s digital public infrastructure is globally admired in civilian domains. Translating that success into secure, high-performance defence analytics demands reforms in procurement, doctrine, training and trust.
The Larger Question
Shyam Sankar’s journey from Mumbai to the command centres of American military technology is both inspiring and unsettling. It demonstrates what talent, when embedded in a supportive ecosystem, can achieve. It also exposes the asymmetry in global technological power.
The twenty-first century will not be defined solely by who fabricates more chips or builds more data centres. It will be defined by who controls the operating systems of state power — the invisible architectures that connect data, decisions and action.
At present, one of the architects of those systems is an Indian-born technologist wearing an American uniform. The deeper question is whether India can nurture its own architects — not only to compete in global markets, but to ensure that the software shaping its defence and strategic destiny is conceived, built and governed at home.
Until that happens, digital sovereignty will remain a slogan rather than a capability.
DefTech India Mission: Seeding Indian Counterparts to Palantir and Anduril

It’s not that we don’t have visionary, erudite people like Lt Col (US Army Reserve) Shyam Sankar in India - as similar people go abroad and are instrumental for innovative technologies and programs there. The problem is the system here.
I served in the DRDO for five years; as the first Director (Intelligence Coordination) of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), I helped raised the DIA as per the recommendations of the KRC; later, I served for a decade in the National Security Council Sectt. as the Head of Defence & Defence Intelligence; and post-retirement in the NDMA/MHA .
My take on the systemic issues:-
-most superiors are from that pre-Industrial Revolution 3.0 (Digital) era, where STEM was limited to knowledge of Pythagoras Theorem, NACL+H2SO4, and Newton’s Third Law; and the most difficult subject was English - one was confronted with essays ranging from The Thirsty Crow to My Best Friend to My Father to My First Airplane Ride to I attended a Hockey-Match, etc, and understanding of Wren & Martin. Even today, many bureaucrats are from St. Stephens. Thus, most had the latest Apple desktop open on their side-table – but didn’t know what to do with it and were prone to working thru’ dictation to a smart PA /PS.
-yet, each one thought that he/she knew everything about everything - and if you tried to explain anything, they would either interject with inanities (which took the discussion to an entirely different direction), or they cut you off as they were fearful you might think they are unaware of that issue.
-now contrast this with the presentation to us about how Saddam Hussain was captured – the visiting 3-star US General introduced the issue and then calmly handed over the floor to a Master Sergeant for the presentation – which made all our people very uncomfortable (“a three-stripper telling us...?”). There was absolutely no cognizing that people lower down the hierarchy can specialize and be experts in their fields.
-next: while we have many thinkers, there are very few who can take a problem, break it down into its component parts, find a workable solution / program / methodology for each, and then then implement the entire the sub-programs individually such that they are one large synergistic, workable whole. Just look at the simple Swachch Bharat Mission and the open defection eradication program - they made crores of toilets, but forgot to cater for water to flush those t toilets and to manage the resultant waste. That's stupidity at an elemental level.
-we are prioritize rhetoric and spectacle over substance, with almost every official more focused on his own image, his CR, his promotion and postings. The end result is that both peers and superiors will not hesitate to put you down if they feel you POV overshadows them in any way. I was often told that if I wanted an idea to be tossed up the hierarchy, then I must ensure that my boss gets all the credit. Worse - most of our politicians are not well educated and officials, instead of siding with an idea which is good for the deptt / country, will side with the political leader(s) in order to curry favour.
In the 19th Century, Mark Twain had rightly observed that "a person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds". That still holds good here in the 21st century. Add that a person with an idea is actually prey for the vultures who don’t get the same spotlight.
This comment is a complement to Big. Singh’s comment. While he’s talked from an establishment perspective, I’ll give an industry pov.

Defence tech had for long been a taboo in Silicon Valley.
Big Tech proactively eschewed military contracts due to internal employee pressure.
Over the last 5 years, there has obviously been a “vibe shift”.
The Indian tech eco-system is too beholden to American intellectual fashions and usually operates at a lag.
You’ll start to see a lot of “defence” and nationalist tech companies. It’s happening already.
However, the problem is fashions change. If in three years, Trump is gone and pacifist liberals have regained their cachet you’ll see a vibe shift again.
But while America would have built up their Andurils of the world by then, the fledgling Indian startups would be caught flat footed.
There needs to be independent thinking champions in India’s tech ecosystem to nurture these companies and shield them from ephemeral political/market trends.
