Introduction: In a world often consumed by personal pursuits, there are individuals who embody the essence of selfless service, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. One such remarkable figure is Baba Sewa Singh, the Chief Patron of the Nishan-e-Sikhi organization, headquartered in Khadoor Sahib, Tarn Taran district of Punjab. Just a few days ago, on June 28th, 2023, I had the privilege of visiting Khadoor Sahib and being a part of the inauguration ceremony for the training course designed to prepare Civil Services aspirants. This unforgettable experience deepened my connection with the values that Baba Sewa Singh exemplifies and reinforced the significance of "sewa bhav" in Sikhi.
A Journey Fueled by Sewa Bhav: Throughout my career, I have witnessed the transformative power of sewa (service) in both personal and professional capacities. From serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar from 1992 to 1996 and as the Additional Deputy Commissioner from 1990 to 1992, to dedicating nearly four decades to public service, my journey has been intertwined with unique opportunities to serve the people and the nation. While the discharge of official duties is an integral part of any civil servant's responsibilities, it is essential to recognize that service to the community at large extends beyond the confines of work.
Inspiration from Baba Sewa Singh: Baba Sewa Singh, the epitome of selfless service, has left an indelible mark on countless lives. His unwavering commitment to the values of "sewa bhav" has been a beacon of hope for those in need. I have closely observed his tireless efforts in transforming communities and uplifting the less fortunate since my days as the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, when Tarn Taran was still part of the district. After my superannuation in July 2021, I have had even greater opportunities to be associated with his remarkable work.
The Spirit of Charity: Charity, a fundamental tenet of Sikhism, resonates deeply with the spirit of service to humanity at large, irrespective of faith, religion, or caste. The power of giving and the desire to uplift those in need form the backbone of our respective endeavors. Baba Sewa Singh's work has touched the hearts of generous donors from various backgrounds, enabling the Nishan-e-Sikhi organization to carry out noble initiatives and create positive change in society. Charity goes beyond monetary contributions; it involves offering one's services, both manual and intellectual, to empower marginalized sections of society to become self-reliant.
Inspiring Moments with Baba Sewa Singh: On the auspicious day of June 28th, 2023, I was filled with gratitude and anticipation as I joined Baba Sewa Singh and the Civil Services aspirants in Khadoor Sahib. The atmosphere buzzed with determination and hope as these aspiring individuals embarked on their journey of serving the nation. Baba Sewa Singh, the Chief Patron of the Nishan-e-Sikhi organization, stood tall as an emblem of guidance and inspiration. His wise words and profound insights resonated deeply with the young minds, igniting a fire within their hearts to make a difference through their future endeavors.
A Feeling of Blessing and Returning to the Community: Participating in this significant event alongside Baba Sewa Singh was a humbling experience that left a deep mark on my soul. Witnessing the dedication and determination of the Civil Services aspirants, combined with Baba Sewa Singh's unwavering commitment to "sewa bhav" filled me with a deep sense of gratitude and blessing. It rekindled the spirit of service within me, reminding me of the immense responsibility to give back to the community and the state of Punjab that has nurtured me throughout my journey.
The Way Forward: My visit to Khadoor Sahib on June 28th, 2023, marked by the presence of Baba Sewa Singh as the Chief Patron of the Nishan-e-Sikhi organization, was a truly transformative journey that reinforced the power of "sewa bhav" in Sikhi. As I reflect on this experience, my connection with the values espoused by Baba Sewa Singh grows stronger. Together, let us embrace the spirit of selfless service, ignite the flame of "sewa bhav" within our hearts, and work collectively towards creating a brighter and more compassionate world.
I have been a frequent visitor to Khadoor Sahib after my joining in GNDU Amritsar in 1979. During my last visit in 2021, I was highly impressed by the SEWA going on to impart free training to job aspirants from poor families. It is a good news that KBS Sidhu has joined this Sewa wholeheartedly.
