The major issue is that citizens rarely get to ask the politician to give the audit of what has been accomplished. Journalists can but there are hardly a few who would ask the question.
One possible solution might be a separate independent entity that can provide this audit with a regular frequency, citing not just government figures but also from other sources.

Social media now gives an unprecedented chance to citizens to post this question, howsoever small their reach might be.
CAG is supposed to audit and ask these questions but it rarely does so now.
