Overview of Recent Incidents
Over the past few days, a few instances of violence and vandalism have targeted Hindu temples in Canada, raising considerable alarm within the community. These incidents, allegedly instigated by pro-Khalistani or anti-social elements, have especially unsettled the Indian diaspora. The most notable attack occurred on November 3, 2024, at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, Ontario—a locality with a significant population of Punjabi immigrants, many of whom have made Canada their home over recent decades. This concentration of Indo-Canadian residents, particularly those from Punjab, highlights the gravity of such incidents within a community that has long prided itself on its cultural harmony and peaceful coexistence in Canada.
Details of the Incident at Hindu Sabha Mandir
The recent incident at the Hindu Sabha Mandir began as a protest, reportedly organised by pro-Khalistan groups. What initially appeared to be a peaceful demonstration escalated when some protesters breached the temple gates and entered the premises, leading to clashes with congregants. Witnesses reported that a few protesters, carrying flags and symbols associated with the Khalistan movement, used items like flagpoles and traffic cones, reportedly to intimidate those gathered. According to accounts, among those impacted were women, children, and elderly individuals who were present for their regular prayers.
Observers from the community described an atmosphere of tension as the situation unfolded, with congregants feeling threatened by the unexpected turn of events. There were reports of verbal exchanges and minor altercations, which have raised concerns within the Indo-Canadian community regarding the safety of religious gatherings. Community members have expressed dismay at the incident, pointing to the need for maintaining harmony and security in places of worship. This episode has highlighted sensitivities among Indian-origin Canadians and underscored the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect in multicultural spaces.
Tensions Over Consular Services at Hindu Sabha Mandir
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the initial protest by Khalistan supporters outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton was purportedly in response to the presence of Indian consulate officials, who were there to offer routine administrative services, including assistance with pensions for seniors. The protesters reportedly voiced objections, questioning why similar consular camps were not organised at Gurdwaras to support Sikh Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and permanent residents.
The situation became more volatile when a few congregants from the Mandir reportedly stepped outside to engage with the protesters, leading to clashes. This incident has raised questions about the advisability of holding consular camps in such a charged environment, with concerns mounting over the safety and appropriateness of these gatherings amid heightened tensions.
Law Enforcement's Handling of the Situation
The Peel Regional Police maintained a strong presence outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir to manage the protest. However, their handling of the situation has attracted criticism, as no immediate arrests were made following the violent clashes. Some reports suggest that police actions may have disproportionately affected Hindu worshippers, with certain accounts alleging that officers used excessive force on congregants while appearing to shield the protesters.
This incident has sparked rare criticism of the Peel Regional Police, an organisation generally regarded as fair and impartial. For perhaps the first time, the police force has faced allegations of partisanship, possibly influenced by the presence of a significant number of Sikh personnel in its ranks. While the diversity of the Peel Police is usually celebrated, community members have raised concerns that this incident could strain trust and perceptions of neutrality in law enforcement. This episode underscores the importance of maintaining balanced responses and ensuring that all communities feel equally protected in Canada’s multicultural framework.
Targeting of Indian Consulates in Canada
Alongside temple attacks, consular camps in Surrey and Vancouver faced similar disruptions on November 2-3, 2024. According to the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, violent disruptions occurred outside these consular camps, though no direct attacks on the Ottawa High Commission were reported.
Response from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned these acts, urging the Canadian government to protect all places of worship and prosecute those responsible for the violence. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed deep concerns over the safety of Indian nationals in Canada and affirmed that consular services would persist despite these attempts at intimidation.
Reaction from Canadian Politicians
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced the violence, affirming that all Canadians have the right to practice their faith freely and safely. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed outrage, labelling the incident “unacceptable” and underscoring the necessity of religious freedom. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown condemned the recent attack on a Hindu temple by Khalistani extremists and said that those responsible should be punished to the greatest extent of the law. Additional voices, such as MP Chandra Arya, raised awareness about the growth of Khalistani extremism within Canada.
Statement from Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council
The Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council (OSGC) has issued a strong condemnation of the violent incident that occurred outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir on Gore Road in Brampton on November 3rd, 2024. In their statement, the OSGC emphasized that violence and intimidation have no place in their community, where peace, unity, and mutual respect are paramount values. The organization stressed the importance of keeping places of worship as sacred spaces for reflection, spirituality, and community cohesion, free from any form of disturbance.
The OSGC called for restraint, dialogue, and collaborative efforts towards peace that respects all communities. They urged local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and encouraged community leaders and members to unite in fostering an atmosphere of unity and compassion. The OSGC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members, regardless of their beliefs, and called for a united stand against all forms of violence
Indian Diaspora's Response to the Attack
The assault has incited anger among the Indian diaspora in Canada. Hindu organisations, like the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), are calling for peaceful protests against what they view as “Khalistani intimidation” and “anti-Hindu hatred.” Community leaders and temple priests have emphasised the importance of unity, urging Hindus to stand together in response to these provocations.
Summing Up— We Cannot Remain Silent Spectators
The targeting of Hindu temples and Indian consulates in Canada calls for unequivocal condemnation from all quarters. Such incidents, in our increasingly interconnected world, carry the potential for profound and far-reaching repercussions, posing risks to communal harmony both in India and abroad. The difficult memories of Hindu-Sikh tensions from the 1980s and early 1990s should stand as a solemn reminder of the consequences when divisive acts go unchecked. To avoid repeating history’s mistakes, it is essential that both communities, global leaders, and law enforcement work together to foster mutual respect, understanding, and unity.
In this spirit, prominent Sikh organisations, such as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), alongside respected Sikh statesmen in India, particularly in Punjab, should join in condemning these acts of violence. Their voices would powerfully underscore a shared commitment to peaceful coexistence and respect for all faiths, reinforcing the responsibility of law enforcement, government officials, and community leaders to act decisively in promoting harmony and safeguarding the sanctity of all places of worship.

Ontario Gurudwara has refrained from naming Khalistanis in their statement, which makes it clear that our Gurudwaras in Canada are captured and controlled by Khalistani elements. Counseller services can't be organized at places which are controlled by Khalistanis, you never know they might attach the diplomats, they might put a gun in their bags, can go any extent in their hatred with Hindus and India.
What these Khalistanis are doing is exactly what they did in late 70s in Punjab, and the situation gradually worsened, leading to 1984 and later cleaning of Punjab. Same thing will happen in Canada too in few years. When white govt conducts cleaning drive, there won't be any human rights issues. Then these radicals and SGPC will ask Indian government to talk to Canada.
